Cleaning is a lot more than FDA approved chemicals and PPE

To many people, cleaning is hard. By definition it's dirty. But it is usually the repetition that gets people. You clean something and after a short time it's dirty again. As they say, rinse and repeat.

But cleaning is also a source of pride, especially in the hospitality industry. Since being founded, the Birch Ridge Inn has prided itself in being immaculately clean. The innkeepers, Bill and Mary, joke with the staff about the rooms needing to be "Mom Clean". If the room is not clean enough for "Mom", it's not clean enough for guests. Fortunately, the inn hits that mark a lot as attested in reviews inn guests leave on TripAdvisor and other online review sites.

Viruses and germs present a different problem however. You can't see them. "Mom Clean" is not enough.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, we closely examined all of the cleaning practices used at the inn. New treatment regimens were identified to minimize the propagation of Covid and other pathogens. The new regimens take into account how the spaces at the inn are being used. To elevate our cleaning practices we adopted radically different approaches to disinfection, depending upon specific locations in the inn.

Unoccupied Spaces

Unoccupied spaces (ie: empty guest rooms before new guests check in) require effective and quick treatment for air and surface contaminants while the spaces are not in use. Unoccupied spaces offer a tightly controlled environment. Access to unoccupied spaces is denied while treatment is taking place. Simply put, the doors can be locked. Fortunately, the controlled application of UV-C light, in an unoccupied and locked guest room, provides an effective treatment regime to address pathogens such as caronavirus, influenza, other viruses and germs.

Occupied Spaces

Occupied spaces (ie the inn's Restaurant and Great Room) present interesting challenges. Unlike a guest room which is inhabited by people closely associated with one another, the occupied spaces of the inn generally see many different groups of people using the space at the same time. As such, occupied spaces require a treatment regimen which functions in the physical presence of people and be totally invisible to their activities. The treatment needs to effectively deal with air and surface contamination, yet not create a hazardous environment for people while treatment is taking place. It must function continuously as the introduction of contaminants to the environment is random; taking place when guests or staff are occupying the space. To treat occupied spaces, the Birch Ridge Inn has adopted Bio-Defense technology from Synexis; specifically their Synexis Sphere.
